Lincoln’s irony

I happen to be wearing a shirt.woot.com t-shirt with the Gettysburg Address on it (in the shape of Lincoln’s head), which somewhat explains the reason for this post. A few lines into it, Lincoln says…
The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
Does anyone else see the irony in this?
